You need the best in every role, not just a few good people here and there
It might seem impossible to have your entire team made up entirely of truly great people. I mean, there’s always going to be “that one person” right? No! Actually, you should strive for everyone to be “B+ to A+” rated team players. You can have the best, and it’s the most important thing you can do for your business. When you have a team of superstars, they harmonize in a field of excellence. The “machine,” as I like to call it, becomes a Ferrari. The machine runs itself, it finds out ways to be better on its own, and it blows the competition out of the water. Finding and retaining top talent is also the number one topic of importance that CEOs have been worrying about for the past few years. They know how valuable it is to have the right people, and to make sure those people are working together to get the job done as best as possible.
Think about the big companies — the successful, advanced, mega-large, established companies like Amazon, Google, eBay, Investment Banks, etc. – they don’t have some good employees and a few bad apples. They have the very best employees in every single seat, so they can stay ahead of the competition—not just from their executives and mid-level managers, but even their administrative clerks and front-desk receptionists. They do recruitment right, from A to Z— an ongoing process where not just HR is involved, but everyone is involved in an attempt to make all employees breathe and live the culture of their company & brand to maximize retention and keep a pipeline of strong candidates flowing for whenever they need them.
These companies invest in keeping the talent struggle at a minimum by keeping the pipeline flowing. They offer amazing networking sessions, competitions and programs that engage prospective candidates on a long-term basis. They base their entire culture on making sure they attract and retain the best people with superior marketing and branding. And they also invest on retainment: top-notch onboarding practices & training, great culture & perks, just to name a few obvious things… And they still struggle, because in today’s tight market competition is incredibly fierce; these companies still use outside recruiters when they need to find the very best for certain crucial roles.
Smart leaders are aware that they can solve any problem when they have the best people working for them. These people find solutions fast, grind it out when things have to get done, and find the right solutions to solve problems long-term. They get at the heart of the problem, instead of just slapping a Band-Aid over the issue and moving on superficially. They make everything better and more efficient. They believe in the importance of what they are doing and in their companies.
But it’s not just that. If you’re a quality employee you’ll want to work with other quality employees. People elevate themselves and inspire others when they’re around people who do the same. You become like the people you surround yourself with, so it’s vital that you surround yourself with the best people who share compatible cultural traits —yes, they need to match! I don’t mean that people need to be the same of course, just that their intrinsic values must be compatible – the best person from Amazon might not be the right person for Google. And the best person who thrives in a start-up might not necessarily be the right person for an established, stable company. Having the best people that make sense for your team can turn your company into an efficient workplace that operates like a Ferrari. You’ll fly high above your competition, and deliver the best products, services, and performance to your customers. And you’ll surprise yourself with what these people will teach you. Don’t forget that they are your ultimate competitive advantage.
Don’t just have one amazing employee, and a lot of mediocre ones, because your superstar will leave for a better team sooner than later. Strive to have only the best employees that are right for you, and your company will become and remain strong and healthy. Everyone will work hard and harmoniously, and your company will reap the benefits of the superior workforce. With that superior effort comes superior quality, significant value to you and your customers, and a sure way for your company to rise to the top.
